Raptures of the Deep: Beneath British Columbia’s Emerald Sea

Jett & Kathryn Britnell Posted onAugust 6, 2019 Comments are off

“Raptures of the Deep: Beneath British Columbia’s Emerald Sea”, our latest Third Age Expeditions column for Luxe Beat Magazine, has just been published.

Splendor In The Pass

Queen Charlotte Strait lies between the “top end” of Vancouver Island and British Columbia’s mainland. It is an immense waterway with narrow, constricted passages, fjord-like inlets, large islands and a tangled maze of scrawnier weather-beaten islets. Seasonal upwellings combined with extreme tidal water movement produces an enriched planktonic soup that supports a lush profusion of exotic marine life and more than 400 species of marine fish. These waters also support a healthy population of marine mammals and are deemed to be one of the best places on earth to observe seals, sea lions, dolphins, porpoise, Minke whales, grey whales, humpback whales and a resident pod of more than 100 killer whales.

Fish Photography: The Ultimate Undersea Skill

Jett & Kathryn Britnell Posted onJuly 2, 2019July 7, 2019 Comments are off

Our  latest Third Age Expeditions column about “Fish Photography: The Ultimate Undersea Skill” was published today by Luxe Beat Magazine. It was also selected as an Editors Pick Feature.

Approach tactics

Use whatever cover the reef terrain provides and keep the sun behind you. As you slowly creep forward, use as little extra movement as possible and decide how you will frame your subject. If the fish appears nervous, stop and play the waiting game. Every fish has a minimum approach distance. If you violate this limit, the fish will likely swim away. If the fish seem really skittish, simply leave the area and return later in the dive to try again. By then, they will have forgotten about you and resumed their normal routine.

Realm of the Giant Pacific Octopus: Published!

Jett & Kathryn Britnell Posted onMay 17, 2019May 17, 2019 Comments are off

Luxe Beat Magazine has published our most recent Third Age Expeditions column about octopus called, “Realm of the Giant Pacific Octopus.”

Three Hearts, Nine Brains, & Blue Blood?

Giant Pacific octopus are about 90 percent soft-bodied muscle except for two small plates anchoring their heads, together with a beak used to grasp and bite prey They possess three hearts and nine brains. Two smaller hearts pump their blue blood to the gills, while a larger third heart circulates blood to the rest of the body. One central brain controls their nervous system and there is a large ganglion of nerve cells at the base of each of their eight arms, which act like independent brains that work both independently and together to coordinate movement. Their blue blood contains a copper-rich protein called hemocyanin which is more efficient than hemoglobin in cold ocean environments and improves oxygen flow.

Expedition Svalbard 2019 with Jett & Kathryn Britnell

Jett & Kathryn Britnell Posted onMay 14, 2019November 11, 2020 Comments are off

“Interested in stories about underwater photography and protection of our oceans’? What are you doing 14-24 August this year? I am so pleased to say that our friends across the sea, both fellows of the explorer’s club and much much more, are joining us on board the M/S Quest these dates! Come join Jett Britnell, Kathryn Britnell and PolarQuest to the realm of the Polar Bear, the haven for Walrus and the beautiful landscape of Svalbard!”

~ Marie Lannborn Barker, CEO, PolarQuest

Join us for a “Special Departure” aboard PolarQuest’s, M/S Quest, August 14 – 24, 2019. Kathryn and are special guests for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to one of the world’s most remote, northerly, wilderness realms! With ten nights on board the small expedition ship M/S Quest there will be ample time for grand shore-based nature excursions and wildlife encounters. In August the polar ice is slowly starting to loosen its frozen grip, which offers good opportunities to explore the seldom visited eastern parts of Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, which geographically, is closer to the North Pole than to Norway its nearest neighbour 1,000 km away. I am also aboard as a Special Lecturer during this polar voyage.

Fear and Loathing of Sharks: It’s a Love Story!

Jett & Kathryn Britnell Posted onMay 3, 2019May 7, 2019 Comments are off

“I can’t go back to yesterday because I was a different person then.”

~ Alice in Wonderland

Not so much fear and loathing of sharks, but more of a love story about an apex predator that I have both admired and studied for the past 55 years. Yes, I was the kid who chose sharks as the topic for my interest talk to my fellow grade 5 classmates in Ottawa, many years before the movie JAWS scared the living bejesus out of people. So, you could say that I was an early adopter when it came to shark appreciation. This is a story Kathryn and I wrote for Shearwater Research Inc (manufacturers of rugged dive computers for technical divers). Kathryn learned to overcome her fear of sharks after diving into my deep blue sea over the past decade.

The President and the Lady: World’s Greatest Diveable Intact Shipwreck?

Jett & Kathryn Britnell Posted onApril 15, 2019May 7, 2019 Comments are off

Luxe Beat Magazine has published our latest column, “The President and the Lady: World’s Greatest Diveable Intact Shipwreck?”  You can read it: Here

The Fog of War

Bathed in a shroud of dim pale blue light the silent steel hulk looms up from the shadowy depths. An enormous ship at 654 feet the SS President Coolidge, an American luxury ocean liner when she was launched in built in 1931, is equivalent in length to two- and one-half football fields when placed end to end. Like every shipwreck, the Coolidge has a glorious story to tell about a time long ago, in a place far, far away. The tale of how this metal hulk sank into a watery grave was written during the tides of war more than a half century ago.

It’s Our 11th Wedding Anniversary!

Jett & Kathryn Britnell Posted onApril 2, 2019April 30, 2019 Comments are off

“Blue skies of Hawaii smile. On this, our wedding day.” ~ Hawaiian Wedding Song.

Today, April 2nd, is our 11th wedding anniversary!

It was a stupendously gorgeous sunny day 11 years ago when Kathryn and I posed together for wedding pictures on Waimānalo Beach, with our toes in white sand framed by the scenically beautiful cerulean blue Pacific Ocean that stretches along Oahu’s windward coast. We created quite a stir with a few beachgoers that day; with you looking so breath-takingly beautiful in your white Fufu wedding dress, and me clearly trying to “punch above my weight” in a white tuxedo jacket and looking somewhat rakish as if I had just stepped out of an upscale nightclub and gambling den called, “Rick’s Café Américain”, in Casablanca during World War II. Truly, an unforgettable and absolutely perfect day this one turned out to be.

On this joyful occasion there are far too many eloquent things I could say… along with a never-ending river of words I could write. But I will cut to the chase and simply say this. You are both a good woman and a kind-hearted charitable soul who never ceases to inspire me with your unconditional love & sage wisdom. Thank you, for being all that you are… all that you aspire to be… and always… for choosing me to be your husband.

“Happy anniversary, mi amor precioso!”

Pyramids, Plazas and Temples

Jett & Kathryn Britnell Posted onMarch 22, 2019May 7, 2019 Comments are off

Travel Thru History has published our story, “Three Ways to Visit the Ruins” about Mexico’s Mayan ruins on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Pyramids, Plazas and Temples

While many people flock to Riviera Maya solely to drink cold Coronas while sun worshiping on white sand beaches splashed by a crystal-clear turquoise ocean, there are many who choose to ruin their Mexican vacation by stepping back in history by visiting some ancient archeological masterpieces. Today, the Maya’s past is revealed in the impressive crumbling ruins of their elaborate pyramids, plazas and temples which are scattered throughout the Yucatán Peninsula. Many archeological structures still remain undiscovered as they are hidden from view by thick vegetation and cloaked by dense jungle. While there are a seemingly endless number of ancient sites to explore, Chichén Itzá, Tulum and Cobá are three of the Riviera Maya’s finest and most diverse collection of archaeological sites that are easy to visit, and yet, they still possess some unique mysteries to entice modern day explorers.

It does this by spinning a path of slime which keeps it suspended just below the surface of the water. This feat has nothing to do with a well-known biblical miracle, but it is a skill more often observed in tidepools because "walking on water" is easier than
navigating over and around all the obstacles on the tidepool floor. The "original" Vancouver Cocktail. For the last m The "original" Vancouver Cocktail. For the last martini of 2020 something new that is old. Vancouver's historic Sylvia Hotel’s signature cocktail was created in 1954 when the hotel opened. Called the “Vancouver Cocktail” it signaled the birth of a flourishing cocktail scene for the city. The Sylvia Hotel was Vancouver’s first legally licensed cocktail bar that became a center of much decadence. In 1959, Errol Flynn enjoyed the Vancouver Cocktail at the Sylvia… the last before his death in the city. The thing I just discovered is this… for 15 years the recipe for the Vancouver Cocktail that has appeared in print is incorrect. What was being passed off as a Vancouver Cocktail… was in fact… a Fitchett Cocktail. How do I know? I came across a PDF copy of a book published between 1925 and 1942 called “About Town”, which catalogued some of Vancouver’s favourite recipes for both food and drink. Chef Antoine Bernhart of the Vancouver Hotel lent his skills to the food recipes while Mr. Fitchett provided the cocktail recipes. He created the Fitchett Cocktail which was a variation of the original Vancouver Cocktail. I may do a longer story on this later but, in the meantime, Cheers to 2021! 🥂 #cocktail #cocktails#cocktailsofinstagram #sylviahotel @thesylviahotel #newyear #newyearseve #cocktailoftheday
Our New Year's Eve hope.... May the coming year Our New Year's Eve hope....
May the coming year for all be filled with good health, unimaginable happiness, rampant success, wondrous dreams and a heavy dose of clear-headed madness. Always tightly embrace your loved ones a few seconds more… as none of us truly knows when it will be the last hug. Make time to read some good books and create art in your life. Make photographs, paint, write, sing and dance. We remain hopeful that in the second half of 2021 we may all be able to travel more freely again. Perhaps to some far-flung corner of the globe you have never been to before… or to revisit a familiar place. Any space that restores your soul is the goal. Challenge yourself daily to be the best you can be. And remember… love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love. Strive to love unconditionally and accept that it is absolutely OK to agree, or respectfully disagree, with others. That does not mean it is OK to hate others because they think, worship, love, vote or see things differently than you. There is far too much hatred & anger in this world to go round for those who want to attract negativity into their lives. Don't be one of those people. Allow your shimmering light to shine so bright that it reminds others to turn their own light on. It is still a beautiful world brimming with charity, heroism, and acts of random kindness. Be yourself and allow others to be! Peace & Love… Jett & Kathryn 🙏 ❤️ 🍾 🥂 #newyear #newyearseve #newyearseve2020 @rcgs_sgrc @the_explorers_club @mobbys_jp @bigbluedivelights @theoceanagency
